I said I'd never go barefoot in a steel mill, I sorta lied.
Well, I wasn't actually in the mill. I picked up my load and was outside chaining it down and tarping it. It was late afternoon, still hot, but the ground was cooling. I was sweating profusely. Since I was more or less by myself I decided to test the waters. I kicked my boots off and left them setting on the truck. I walked all over the aluminum deck of the trailer slinging heavy steel chains and all across the pavement tying down the tarp. It was quite an experience.
I learned some things. First of all, you don't truly realize how much more comfortable bare feet are until you do some real work unshod. Second, the added dexterity and sensitivity really made me feel more secure climbing around. I'm more convinced than ever that barefoot is the best way to be in 99.9% of our typical routine.
