I'm a longtime barefooter, but new to this forum. I've been active on the SBL Yahoo board for many years.
My barefooting didn't really start until Junior High. I grew up in a very clothes compulsive household, which included wearing shoes. Oh we did some barefooting around the house and such, but you were to have shoes on if you were going somewhere. I would sneak off and play with my friends down at the creek behind my house in the summer. The vegetation was so thick that none of the mothers would dare try to make it down there. That not only allowed us to play barefoot in and around the creek, but for the most part we went completely nude down there. A bunch of us would play football in one of the neighbor's yards, and most of the time that was done barefoot. As I got a little older, I could ride my bike away from the house to go to other friends houses or the store. Sometimes I could get away already barefoot, while other times I'd have to ditch the shoes somewhere to go barefoot, and then pick them up on the way home. Finally, when I got my first car, that gave me true barefoot freedom to go just about wherever I wanted. A couple of my early girlfriends seemed to like going barefoot as much as me, and we'd go for barefoot walks around their neighborhoods or parks.
My summer job was at a pool teaching swim lessons and lifeguarding. The perfect barefoot job. It was pretty easy for me to go barefoot for days or weeks at a time. Once in college, I had to wear flip flops to class, most of the time, but got away with some barefooting. I took a summer course in the evening once at a community college, and I always went to that class barefoot. After graduation, I got thrown into the "real world" which meant more formal wear. There wasn't much I could do about that, but outside of work, I went barefoot as much as possible. I got married, and my wife would go barefoot with me some, but she was never as passionate about it as me. We established a clothing optional home, which of course included going barefoot. When our kids came along, things continued along the same path. They learned from us, realizing that clothes and shoes were not always necessary. Our son couldn't wait to get out of his diapers so he could "go nekkid all the time like daddy!". It was totally natural for them to go barefoot all the time, and it was a real chore to get them to wear anything on their feet when it was necessary. Fortunately the school they went to were accepting of flip flops as footwear for the students. It was as close to being barefoot as they could get without getting in trouble. Outside of work and school, we continued to go barefoot just about everywhere, stores, restaurants, etc. It wasn't uncommon to see the four of us walk into the local pizza or burger joint as a barefoot family.
As we've gotten older, our kids have moved out. They go barefoot some, but not like when they were kids. My wife goes barefoot at home, and neighborhood, but not in stores like she used to. She wears flip flops or sandals of some type. On the other hand, I go barefoot just as much if not more than ever. It's somewhat rare to see me in any type of shoe. Temperature is the biggest determining factor for me. If I have to wear something, I have a pair of very thin leather thongs that look almost invisible in the summer when my feet get really tan. If it's cold, I have some Birkenstock clog type slip ons that I wear barefoot. And if it's REALLY cold, I have a pair of Uggs that I wear barefoot. I do most of my work at home, so naturally I'm barefoot, and much of the time I'm totally nude. There are some places that I do work that don't care if I show up barefoot, but I'm careful of who's there, and what's going on. Somehow skimpy flip flops are so much better than bare feet. Go figure!
Living barefoot is just the best! I hope that more people will see the light and join us.
