Barefooting Bulletin Board

While the Spartans wear sandals through most of the movie, they are barefoot during the scene in which they are building a wall. Looking around the web, it seems as though bare feet would have been the normal dress for these soldiers. All of the period depictions I could find show hoplites sans footwear. It's only those representations that obviously came later which show them in sandals. Does this indicate the beginning of the western disdain for bare feet?
