I have been paying extra attention ever since I started barefooting to find others who shared my view. In my travels around the country I have seen countless people wearing sandals and flip-flops, but no other 'footers. Even along the Gulf Coast and in southern Florida, places I would expect to be swarming with unshod folks, I have seen none. Even the majority of people I see in their own yards are shod. There was even one man in southern Georgia, very hot and humid, on a riding mower wearing hiking boots and socks! It really drove home just how small a group we are that I could see literally thousands of people and not a single barefooter. What is particularly amusing is the huge number of people I see riding down the road with their bare feet propped up on the dash. I remember years ago driving barefoot, but always putting my shoes on when I got somewhere. If I knew then.....
Anyhow, this past Wednesday I had my first sighting of another barefooter. I was at the TA truckstop in Wildwood Florida eating lunch when this little old guy walked in barefoot. It was fairly obvious he spent quite a lot of time unshod, his feet were tanned and well-worn like they saw regular use. I made no attempt to contact him, I'm not a particularly social being, but I am fairly certain he noticed me as well.
One fellow 'footer out of countless thousands of people is not very encouraging.
