Spring Fever and request for winter stories

Postby brianjstafford on Mon Mar 03, 2008 7:05 am

Up here in Michigan the winters get pretty cold, but more of a bummer is that salt is everywhere which makes it difficult to go barefoot during the winter months. The cold pavement/snow/ice is relatively easily overcome and can be enjoyed rather easily, but the salt can really do a number on one's feet. We've had a few warm days recently that have left me with an even more than usually insatiable desire for spring and more barefoot friendly pavement. Has anyone that lives in the snowy/icy/salty regions had any success barefooting this winter? Any funny or frustrating winter barefoot tales? Anyone? Anyone?

While I don't live in the snowy areas, I travel through them regularly.

I guess the only story I have that's worth telling is the night I went barefoot in Wisconsin. It was 0F with a -26 windchill and I walked 175 paces across the packed snow of the parking lot to get back to my truck. A few of my toes had minor frostbite, but it healed in a few days.

I wouldn't call it dedication. It was more of a scientific experiment to see just how durable feet are. One of the things I remember thinking when I first started barefooting was that it would end when the weather got cold. Apparently that's not the case.
